Rain: Idea Vault
NOTE: This article is not an academic paper that is peer-reviewed.  This is simply an expression of ideas based on our past experiences and personal judgments and not tested by scientific studies or research.  Our ideas come from our organization's perspective and experiences and we want to share them to our audience

For the past years I have been working as a freelance designer/developer and since that time I founded Rain Creative Lab, I was puzzled by creative people.  I wondered about what it takes to build a great creative team.  What kind of attitude is important?  What should be the level of competence, experience and expertise needed to make a creative team work?  I've tried researching on what makes a  great design team, only to be disappointed.  I found there was a dearth of literature. It was in this sheer puzzlement and lack of written resources that I came up with the idea of a 4-Brain Creative team.  It is a process of classifying creatives that function as one team that supports, amplify and complements each other's skills and talents.

In the past, we all know that the brain is divided into 2 main regions: the left and the right hemisphere.  Left brainers are known to be analytical, rational, mathematical and straight right strategic.  And right brainers are more on the creatives, emotional, intuitive and artistic.  We are inclined to use a particular region base on our personal unique makeup.   However, I believe that human beings, those who are  highly creative in particular are more complex than that.  A creative person  does not only use one side of his/her brain but utilize both to achieve that creative feat.

Creative Brain 4 RegionsFrom 2 major hemisphere we subdivide the brain into 4 distinct areas that tackle a particular area of creative genius and marvel.  These major regions show the varying strength and weaknesses, potentials, and value of a creative individual.  Each hemisphere correspond to a particular creative activity that demands totally different discipline, processing power and understanding.  On the left hemisphere, the creative can be guaged on the value of creative analysis  and visual harmony.  This side of the brain particularly engage on analysis, integration, order, logic, process and form.  The, on the other, right hemisphere is divided into creative visualization and sensory perceptions.   This side works on the value of synthesis acquired by the creatives though his senses, visualize images based on past experiences and sensory stimulants.  This is a major region where creatives can be gauged by the maturity of their experiences, levels of skills and immersion to their chosen crafts.

Creative Analysis:

Have you ever wondered why other people are very good at coming up with  creative solutions to any given problems?  How do they see the complex situation to come up with that one grand idea that engages and excites?

Creative analysis is a section that tackles levels of abstractions, concepts and varying preconceptions to form something of value.  It is about tracing every pieces of a puzzle to come up with the bigger picture.  It does not end in just stitching ideas togethe  but it also  transcends by creating something of value.

These are ideas that change, challenge and engage  audience.  It is that one giant leap that say... "Why haven't I thought of that?"  It may be the eureka moment for some. but for others it is just a manner of revelation.  Creative analysis is the intense formulation of creative solutions bounded by parameters and conditions.  It boxes someone into an available movable space where he can exploit and explore ideas.

We always say "think outside the box."  Outside box thinkers are gifted in this area.  They are macro-thinkers and big-picture seekers.  They are endowed with the power to generate combination and permutations of all possible ideas presented to them no matter the setbacks and challenges.

Creative Analysis

Not all creatives are blessed with the power to generate engaging ideas.  Some creatives, as they may call themselves, are not born creative problem-solvers.  Other just do not think outside of that box, or even so afraid to peep outside.  These are people who just can see boundaries and limitations.  Have you ever wondered how great ideas manifested in various forms just stick to the minds of its audience like glue?  It is because these creatives problem-solvers have the shared experiences of others, and that they were able to synthesize their other past experiences to come up with good and integrated solutions.  Not everyone can create solutions or even generate solutions.  However, some people are just plain gifted or just lazy to think.  This is because I believe that the level of creative analysis is formed in a manner that enables individual to respond to the demands of their environment.  This region is formed and can be developed through time and experience.  Its a tedious process other "creatives" do not mind exploring.

Visual Harmony:

Mathematically, colors can be a represented into forms of numbers ranging from 0-255 (RGB). Combined with series of combination and you get myriad of possibilities.  Negating the facts that adding a layer that ranges from 0 to 1 (Hue and saturation) would give us a totally different level of tonality and value.  Just like colors, proportions, ratios, sequence, flow and ergonomics visual details take part into a bigger stratosphere of making something - to coined it "beautiful."  Design are governed by rules developed by nature and others by designers themselves, integrating concepts that replicates the natural beauty nature has provided us.

Our brain, as an integral part of our body, follow a certain order.  Have you ever questioned we have two sets of eyes and not one?  Why do we have only one set of nose, perhaps, two sets of ears?  Why is our face and body, things in nature are organize in a particular way?  Because by nature, we need order and structure.  This order and harmony is greatly reflected on left-side of the brain that focuseson Visual Harmony.

Visual harmony tackles one thing - order- order in forms of but not limited to harmony, balance, structure, patterns and colors.  Visual harmony is the area of the brain that tell us that something is wrong when something is imbalanced or some color is not just working.  Visual harmony keeps creatives sane and grounded so that we do not go berserk in the things that we do and perceive.

Visual Harmony

Great architecture are done by great artists.  Highly developed visual harmony enables these artists to spot patterns, irreconcilable color differences and harmony.  They have a great sense of order and balance. They find the balance between the lines and curves, the structural design and even consider its efficiency not to mention its aesthetics. We use this region in dealing with areas like software interfaces, web sites, printed collaterals, packaging and product designs.

Creative Visualization

Creative Visualization:

Some artists can execute great ideas with ease and efficiency.  With the right skills and techniques in their arsenal, there is no idea that can not be done, visualized and experience.  These is what makes us craftsman and masters of our crafts.  It is the area where creatives imagine things out of myriad of ideas presented to them, squeezing out pictures and visual representation out of their mind. They present these imaginations into tangible and experiential manifestations.

Creative visualization is the area where we integrate ideas formed in our left side (Creative Analysis). These ideas are then grounded by the rules (Visual Harmony) and form their corresponding imagery and visual representations.  However, this is not just the area where we visualize.  This is also the area where we execute.  This area is responsible in translating visual images from our brain to our chosen tools of trade.

However, creative visualization has two requirements to function effectively.  One has to have the visual inclination to imagine, form images in ones mind, and finally a solid skill and technique where he/she can express these concepts visually.  These two work hand- in-hand to form that one great idea into reality.  And this is where we see a big skill gap.

Some creatives are just plain imaginative, filled with ideas but they are unable to translate these ideas into visual reality.  This gap is caused by lack of experience in doing a particular technique.  We always fall in to the trap that we say, "I can do better than that."  an ego-boosting, sometimes arrogant attitude of creatives. We always fall into the fumes of hunger for doing the best that we could do.  However, when push comes to shove, when some are given the chance to actually do it, some may produce less than mediocre work.  This is the big creative gap.  We can be ideally creative but the true test of creativity is output.  Ideas are flour to make the bread.  You need to have the dough, and finally the oven to make it rise.  If you do not have any these components, and you will not be able to deliver creative work or if you do, you fail according to the standard of excellence.  This area can only be improved through practice and continuous commitment to experience.  Immersion to various influences, trying it out, doing it yourself is the only way that bridge the big skill gap.

Sensory Perceptions

Sensory Perceptions:

Have you ever wondered why creatives are inspired by sensory stimulants?  Why does listening to this particular music enable you to reach a creative trance?  And this "trance" allow you to focus your mind to produce great works.  It is because, creatives are extremely sensitive.  We are not  creatives if we neglect the importance of our senses.  Basic as they may be, these senses enable us to create beyond what is possible.  They makes us leap, feel majestic and proud.

Sensory perceptions is the region of the brain that react to deep sensory stimulants that enable creatives to be sensory submissive thus inducing creative trance (Creative Mood).  Sensory perceptions are important for artists as they use their senses very often when creating their work.  It is through these senses that we are able to visualize things that pass through our body.

Creatives should act like dry sponge that sucks out water.  It is through these senses we build tons of great ideas.  Our brain acts as a massive database of past experiences and visual landmarks that we tap every time we are to create something.

Some creatives are so sensitive with stimulants that they can easily tap their creative database.  Some are just so lazy to try.  Sensory perception is what makes a work something personal.  It is the reflection of the person behind the work.

It It what makes the design or concept personally unique?  It is through these senses that our brain and our body collaborate to form something that reflects who we are.  Each creative have varying degree of sensory perception.  It is a manner of understanding what is the best stimulant for you to access those precious creative bank right at the top of your head.
